5 comments on installing Simplex's templates

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 06:58 AM PST

I received many comments related to installing Simplex's templates. Some of them repeated many times with the same reasons. So in this blog post, I would like to show you some example:

1. "Give me the original template"

In some emails and comments, people ask me to send them original templates which I used in demo because they can't install template with file I provided. There's no new and interesting answer for this question: the template that I used in demo is what I provided in this website. Why do I need to build another one for you to download and one special for me? In this case, you need to check downloaded file if it the latest version or not? and make sure that you follow all steps in install instruction.

2. "I can get widget and slider work"

Some people trying to add code to widget content, trying to make it works. Which code? I don't know, they might Google for something added to widget content, after that, back to me and telling something such as "it doesn't work" OMG, all you need to do is to add a label name into widget content, no need any code.
Others try to add more than 1 label into widget content, so they have the same result: It doesn't work. Because each widget can contain one label only, if you need to add more than one label, you can create another label then added to posts of above labels. For example, you want to show posts under label (category) "sport", "headline", and "business" in homepage slider, so you can create a new label "feature", add this label to posts under three labels "sport", "headline", "business". After that, add to slider one label "feature" only.

3. "I need to edit the text "xyz" in template"

All texts/terms shown in Simplex's templates are in English, and people want to change it to their language, but they don't know how.
In install instruction of template, there's a step edit template in a word editor. All you need is to press Ctrl+F to enable search function. Type the term you want to edit in search dialog, it will show you where the term is. For example, I need to change the phrase "Read More" in template, so I search for "Read More" and it show me where the term is.

4. "I added some script to this template, and it stops working"

I received requests from people ask me to take a look on their websites because they stop working. When I check their site, everything is ok and nothing wrong with existed scripts. The only problem is scripts that added: advertiser script, effect scripts… these scripts conflict with existed scripts or these new added scripts loading for a long time that make existed scripts not load. As you know, some scripts in Simplex's template can execute only after other elements finish loading.

5. "My blog works well until today, hosting 110mb die…"

This issue repeated thousand times in SimplexDesign blog and it doesn't stop till now. I already make new version of templates which added script into template file, and announced these updates many times. I think it's because they downloaded Simplex's template from outdated sources.
If you read this post and your blog stop working today because of 110mb.com hosting, please update your template in Template Download page.

These 5 types of comments above are what I've seen many times in my blog. Hope this post can help you figuring out problem and make Simplex's templates work well.

5 Design Tips to Create a Website That Becomes an Inspiration

Posted: 19 Nov 2013 08:34 AM PST

Every web designer worth his salt wants to create a website that ends up on the top ten inspiration lists that do the rounds of the World Wide Web. Every designer craves to hear a "very well done" by the client, but seeing their websites in the 'inspiration lists' is the real Nirvana. For them, this means their web design has worked and worked big time.

With so many websites being built day in and day out, how do some of them grab eyeballs and inspire other designers, while there are others that just about manage to attract the attention of target audiences. The answer lies in the thinking process of designers that allows them to come up with unique niche specific designs. It's nothing to do with their expertise and experience in a particular design technology. I have seen even the most experienced and technically skilled designers come up with really ordinary designs.

So what is their thinking process like? What do these creative minds do that others can't? How do even inexperienced designers come up with really extraordinary designs? These design tips will give you the answers you are looking for:

1. They Strategically Establish Design Goal Posts

(Image Credit: Referee Association, UK)

When a client approaches them with a project, these designers absorb the project brief and delve deep into the website's purpose, client expectations and the tangible and abstract objectives from the site. This allows them to get a fix on the design goals posts, which means they are very clear what their web design needs to achieve. This allows them to figure out the emotion their site needs to exude and the actions the design must persuade the visitors to take.

2. They Conceptualize with the End in Mind

Design becomes an inspiration if and only if the designer's creative pursuit helps achieve the desired objectives of the client and user. To put in a nutshell, a design only works if its concept is client oriented and user defined with an eye on the end goals. Creativity at the cost of goals doesn't make for a successful web design. So, conceptualization of such sites is definitely imaginative but backed by some solid goal orientation.

3. They Get Inspiration from Everywhere

(Image Credit: Living In Valley Road)

Surprised! Don't be! Even the best and the most creative of them all require inspiration and they get it from various sources. Now, these sources don't necessarily mean the 'top ten websites' list, but they get their inspiration from anywhere and everywhere. They get it from magazines, movies, record labels, posters, architecture, and home decoration ideas; essentially they get it from anywhere and everywhere. Their sources of inspiration aren't limited, but limitless. They can take some real life inspiration and bring it to life in the form of creative visuals for the site. That's what allows them to come up with something special every time.

4. They Take Their Time

If you are looking for a special kind of design, it will take time. This time needs to be factored into project timeline. It's not about taking things easy, but giving yourself enough time to come up with something special. The quick fire, assembly line kind of design process, never helps you come up with anything remotely inspiring. Time pressure more often than not, kills creativity. This is why, if you want to come up with inspirational design, you need to give yourself the time to come up with one. Most clients are agreeable to designers taking some more time to work on their website's designs if they promise to come up with something truly inspirational. After all, it's the clients who are going to benefit from such designs.

5. They Stay Away from Herd Mentality

(Image Credit: Constant Contact Blogs)

Most designers while designing a website follow a road that most other designers travel, and that too with their blinkers on. They do not look left or right, just follow a path that leads to ordinariness, because everybody else is doing it. But the good ones make it a point not to travel down the over-trodden path. It's not that they take a left when they need to take a right, it's just that they try to think differently. For example, they don't pick a flat design approach, just because everybody else is doing it; if they believe a mixture of flat and retro will allow them to come up with a unique and impressive design, they go ahead with it.

More than anything else, designers who come with inspirational designs are so confident about their craft that they are not afraid to take risks. Of course, they take calculated risks, which have more chance of success rather than failure. Also, the fact that they pursue their designing jobs with all honesty and passion and with a desire to change the status quo helps them go where no designer has gone before. A la Star Trek, they take their designing space ship into uncharted territory and bring their imagination to life.

Simplex Reporter - Responsive template for magazine and newsportal

Posted: 10 Nov 2013 09:18 AM PST

In this post, I will show you latest template Simplex Reporter which is good for newsportal and magazine. This template has some features that make it better than other Simplex's:

- Clean design and layout.
- Responsive layout and image
- Resizing images without any distorted or scale.

Install instruction

1. Download template file

2. Open template file in a code editor such as Notepad++. We need to find and edit somethings in template file before uploading to server. Because there's something we can not access via Blogger Dashboard->Layout, editing code directly is the only way.

3. To change Sitename/Logo

Search this code:
<div class="logo">
                     <h1 class="logo-text">
                         <a expr:href='data:blog.homepageUrl' title="Reporter" rel="home">SimplexREPORTER</a>
                     </h1>
                 </div>
You can edit the Sitename (in bold) in the code above.

4. To edit Mega Menu

Search this code:
<div id="drop1" class="f-dropdown content">
                             <!--menu1-->
                             <ul class="large-block-grid-2 small-block-grid-1">
                                 <li id="nav_menu-2" class="widget widget_nav_menu">
                                      <h3 class="widget-title"><span>Pages</span></h3>
                                     <div class="menu-pages-container">
                                         <ul id="menu-pages" class="menu">
                                             <li><a href=''>Category</a></li>
                                             <li><a href=''>Category</a></li>
                                             <li><a href=''>Category</a></li>
                                             <li><a href=''>Category</a></li>
                                         </ul>
                                     </div>
                                 </li>
                                 <li id="dt_social_widget-4" class="widget widget_dt_social_widget">

                                 </a>
                                 <a target="_blank" class="RSS" href="#">
                                     <img alt="RSS" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgb7Z8aXGraMho9HfiRAfkzN7FetrJ9JiPSid6c_fkzbDhpGgZeFOwcJgO4p_Dv3tFzfETDM_qewvkM-1a3_fhca2RobdejoNWdCTXArBt5z42Wyqrl3pYbwFePuMTbjkr8ZUJYVC3BaeHT/s1600/RSS_2.png"/>
                                 </a>
                                 <a target="_blank" class="Twitter" href="#">
                                     <img alt="Twitter" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3m1HJHXOQDoGE-rgOQHcbG3SedL4Y5fFKdR-s5c7qyl5J9dMruabE3VL9jwhs6WN1TMGjpVDagFhtTin5dvN7QBeRpc_-pZL1LOxbMmIJ4tjNwdQZG3N6_9H6yEJGQiX4fC6N8nhBH1j8/s1600/Twitter_2.png"/>
                                 </a>
                             </div>
                         </li>

All you need to do is to find these blocks of code and then edit it as you want.
You can also add scripts right after these blocks of code, but remember to encode your script. (You can encode script by paste it in text box of this site, then copy-paste the result back).

6. After editing, you need to upload template file to Blogger.

7. Go to Blogger Dashboard -> Layout tab

8. To add news to Flashnews

Click on Edit link at Flashnews widget

Add the category which you want to show in widget content.

9. Do the same for other widgets: Homepage Slider, Headline, Block1, Block2, Block 3, Block4,  Block5, Block6, Gallery

10. For the footer, there are 4 widgets for adding content: Footerblock1, Footerblock2, Footerblock3 and Footerblock 4. You can add/remove existed widgets and replace with your own.

That's all for this template. Hope this helpful to you.
